How to qualify as a Driving Instructor

You must first apply to be added onto the official DVSA register of instructors. Each application is assessed to verify that you are a 'fit and proper person' to be added onto it. A current DBS (England) / PVG (Scotland) check will be completed.

You then need to sit and pass three tests known in the industry as Part One, Part Two and Part Three. These tests are quite demanding and will require preparation in advance of taking them so don't think it is an easy process. From those who start the training process and who go on to qualify, the uptake is only around 25% which shows that there is a demand for instructors.

Part One (Theory Test) can be taken as many times as you need to pass it. However, for parts two and three, you are limited to three attempts for each. If you are not successful you will be excluded from the process for two years after which you will need to start again from the beginning.

Your theory test consists of two sections and you must pass both at the same sitting. The multiple choice element tests your knowledge and understanding of the highway code, road safety, driving techniques, first aid and the theory of teaching. It lasts about 90 minutes and you need to get 85% to pass. The second part is the hazard perception test which uses 14 video clips, one of which has two hazards within it. You need to score 57 points from a possible 75 to pass.

Part Two is an advanced practical driving test in which you will be expected to display a high professional level of practical driving ability. Our training course will provide you with 10 hours of tuition on a 1-2-1 basis and it will push you to achieve the standard required. The test itself lasts about an hour and you will be asked to complete two driving manoeuvres .... going backwards!

In part three you will be assessed in your ability to provide a client centered driving lesson on a topic of your choice. This assessment will be your grading allowing you to pass on your skills to others. We will support you through this by offering the legal required hours of tuition which upon completion will allow you to apply for a PDI badge that lets you teach and practice your skills before sitting the final test. This option allows you to earn a salary whilst training with us.
